Growing and Improving Nordic Skiing in Routt County

Our Mission
The Routt County Nordic Ski Association (RCNSA) is dedicated to fostering community and communication within the Nordic skiing community in Routt County. Our mission is to enhance access to high-quality Nordic skiing experiences by improving trail grooming, strengthening communication among skiers, and advocating for trail improvements. We strive to create a welcoming environment for skiers of all levels—whether recreational, competitive, or new to the sport—by promoting education, race/event opportunities, and collaboration with local organizations. Through strategic planning and community-driven initiatives, we aim to make Nordic skiing more accessible, enjoyable, and well-supported across the valley.

Current Projects
-
Early Season Skiing at Howelsen Hill
RoCo has partnered with Steamboat Nordic to create a single, unified volunteer grooming team. Thanks to this team, we have all been able to ski at Howelsen Hill much, much earlier than if we were relying exclusively on the city. In fact, all of the grooming that has occurred at HH so far this year is due to the efforts of this team.
This was made possible by a very generous donation of a snowmobile from Bill and Debbie Feiges, as well as an anonymous donor who funded the grooming implement. Several volunteers from our Nordic ski community have been providing all of the manpower for the grooming.
-
Nordic Pulse Funding
RoCo has taken on the responsibility of funding Nordic Pulse, the real-time grooming report system. RoCo is fundraising to provide this software for all Nordic venues in town except Howelsen Hill, which is supported by the city. This expense is too substantial for The Touring Center, Haymaker, Catamount, and Bruce’s Trail to absorb independently, so your donation helps ensure that we can continue to provide this valuable service to the Nordic community.
-
New Nordic Race at Howelsen Hill
Run, Rabbit, Run race director Paul Sachs is working hard to launch an epic Nordic ski race at Howelsen Hill—hopefully as soon as this year. This event would add another much-needed local race and offer a very challenging distance event inspired by the RRR trail race. The goal is to create a marathon-ish ski distance made even more special by utilizing all of the existing Nordic trails at HH, and potentially some new ones as well. While the details are still being finalized, we are working hard to make this happen.
-
WhatsApp Trail Condition Report Group Chat
We continue to operate the very popular, crowd-sourced WhatsApp trail condition report. This has proven to be an invaluable resource for our community, particularly during the early and late seasons. If you are not yet a subscriber and would like to join, please email schafer.jon@gmail.com.
-
Local Lobbying
To help accomplish all of the projects listed above, we have recruited members of our Nordic ski community to join us in attending Parks and Rec commission meetings, City Council meetings, and ad hoc meetings with leadership teams from Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, the city's grooming and trail maintenance teams, and Routt County Riders leadership teams. We believe that there is so much more than can be accomplished through better communication and cooperation with other existing individuals, groups, and organizations in our endurance sports community.

Better Serving You
Perhaps most importantly, RoCo was designed to be your organization. We want to represent the voice of the community and act on initiatives that matter to you. RoCo is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3), and we encourage everyone interested in improving Nordic skiing in Routt County to join RoCo as a member. Your membership helps ensure your voice is heard and allows us to achieve these shared goals. We’re here for you—and we can’t do this without you.
One hundred percent of all donations are used to fund these initiatives. We are a completely volunteer-run organization, so you can be confident that every dollar donated directly benefits our community, with absolutely zero allocated to overhead.
